The big event of week was the England National Cross country championships, one of the biggest fixtures in world cross country and possibly the biggest even the majority of amateur runners will ever compete at. Harriers had representatives in the senior women’s and men’s events as well as the U15 boys event. Braga, Portugal, 20th-27th Feb. 2022 Three Preston Harriers attended these championships: Sharon Wilkinson (W50), Carol Holt (W40) and Alan Appleby (M70). Sharon was competing in the 200m and 400m, Carol the 200m and Alan in the cross country and 3000m. The competitions started on the 20th with the cross country races held at the Cavalry Regiment 6 headquarters on the outskirts of the town. After a gap of two years, the English National cross country championships finally returned to one of the best championship venues on the circuit, and the one that is recognised as the iconic home of “the National”, Parliament Hill Fields, in London.
