Harriers in the LEP again

Here is the latest report on Harriers action which has featured in the Lancashire Evening Post:

Catforth Canter - No1 in this year's series: Saturday 27th May

On a lovely Saturday evening the first of the Catforth Canters took place. Based at Catforth village hall a few miles north of Preston, the 5K race is just about as flat as you can get on roads, so good for a 5k road PB.

It was a Red Rose Club Championship race, so lots of red and white vests; there were about twenty people who had just completed their 'Couch to 5k' and were doing this as their first 5k; a good contingent of B.W.F runners and three lady Preston Harriers, Carla Davies, Julie Tyrer and Sue Wickham, the rest of the field was made up of locals and a few club runners.

With a beer to all over 18 finishers, or soft drink if preferred, the £8 affiliated entry fee is good value. There are also prizes for first 3 male and females and first Vets, male and female, up to 80 years.

The race starts at 6.30pm from in front of the local primary school and after three left hand turns at road junctions ends after the finish funnel back at the school. After a quick canter around the course the first person back was Simon Croft of Red Rose in 15.58, a good

way in front of the next two runners in 17.13 and 17.16. In 4th place overall and first lady was Carla Davies of Preston Harriers, a little disappointed in that she had hoped to stay with the two chaps in front instead of being out on her own for most of the race, she posted 17.38.

Julie was the next Harrier home posting a season’s best time of 25.48 and Sue finished in 28.12 after putting in a fast finish to pass at least four runners who had turned the corner some way in front of her. The final runner of the 106 who competed posted a time of 40.26.

The next races for the series are on 24th June and 12th August.
