Harriers Round Up 5th & 6th Feb 2022

Masters Indoor Grand Prix

EIS Stadium Sheffield, Sat. 5th Feb.

Sharon Wilkinson, Carol Holt and Joanne Rowicki went over to Sheffield to compete in these races.

For Carol and Sharon it was in preparation for the upcoming European Masters Indoors Championships to be held in Braga, Portugal. For Joanne it was the first time in many years since she had competed. She used to be a sprinter at Blackpool and with her son getting to a more independent age decided she would like to get back into her running so started with the Preston Harriers Wednesday evening beginners/improvers group eventually moving on to a sprint group with other Masters athletes.

Jo was taking part in the 60m and was in the fifth group with three W40’s among the eight runners. She had a decent run finishing between the other W40 ladies in sixth overall position.

Sharon and Carol were in the sixth 200m and both produced new season’s bests for indoors. Sharon won in 26.98 and Carol was third in 27.61. Jo was in the eighth race and came second in 30.15, a pb although a hamstring niggle caused her to ease up coming to the finish.

Sharon was in the third 400m race, which is her main event, and after taking the British W50 indoor 400m record three weeks ago lowered it again to 60.33 from 61.22, getting very close to the World W50 record. Hopefully this form will be maintained or even improved upon in Braga in a fortnight’s time.

Blackburn Winter Warmer 10km road race, Sunday 6th February 2022

15 Harriers headed across the M65 for this hilly event, which was also the third race in the club’s road championship. First Harrier home, and 4th on the day, was Sam Evans in a time of 34:27 as the new signing continues to excel and carve out a name for himself. In the women’s category, Carla Davies (37:42) took first place after fighting off Claire Clancy of Wilmslow in a close-run battle to line. Emma Essex-Crosby took third in the women’s vet-40 category, Maureen Kirkby was first in the women’s vet-70 category and Andy Whaley (37:29) ran a season’s best.

Northern Athletics U15/U13 Indoor Track & Field Championships

On the track the Northern Athletics U15/U13 championship was staged in Sheffield with a number of Harriers making the trip across to steel city. In the long jump there were new PBs for Oliver Delaney and Emilia Simpson, who took second in the U13 women’s events. Logan Campbell and Lyra Stretch recorded long jump season bests. In the 60 metre sprints there were PBs for Logan Campbell and Emilia Simpson.
