Thornton Cleveleys Inter-Club road race, Tuesday 27th June 2023

After the heatwave conditions of the past two weeks, the weather took an abrupt turn back to winter for the 4th race in the Inter-Club series.

There was a stiff headwind for the first part of the race, it was raining and it was miserably cold for June. Numbers were down overall, with only 242 finishers, but those who did run gave their best on the inhospitable seafront route.

Serial winner Rob Danson of Wesham came out on top yet again, in a time of 26 minutes 22

seconds for the 5 mile course. Preston Harriers’ Wes Wilkinson had a fine run to take 2nd

place in 27 minutes exactly, and fast improving junior Luke Suffolk was 4th, his best-placing

so far in the Inter-Club races.

The other scorers for Harriers’ men’s team were Martin Phillips, Chris Williams, Steve Hallas, David Watson, Stuart Nixon, Gareth Fairclough, Paul Blakemore and Michael Croft.

Arch rivals Blackpool packed in well to take team honours on the night and lead Harriers by 2 points in the season-long competition, with 3 fixtures still to come.

Preston Harriers’ women’s team was also depleted and could only manage 4th on the

night, but like the men, they remain in 2nd place behind Blackpool over the season. Katie

Littlefair was first female counter in 5th place, with team captain Cathy Flitcroft in 9th . The

other scorers were Laura Conn, Katie Johnstone and Georgina Kelly.
