Lancashire Scouts and Guides Orienteering Championships

13 June 2017, Beacon Fell Country Park

A glorious summers evening greeted a large gathering of Scouts, Cubs, Brownies and Guides, including 13 Harriers who had been kindly invited by the organisers, South Ribble Orienteering Club to participate in the event.

The 10 Juniors, 1 senior and 2 shadow runners could enter as many of the courses as they felt capable of doing. The white course of 1.4km was used as a practice run for the younger ones of the group, which included Megan Ind, Grace Horne and Olivia Coupe. They coped with this very well and decided to have a crack at the next level up, which was the 2km Yellow course. This course saw the boys enter the fray with Luke Suffolk, Jamie Hawtin and Vladimir Wiggins, completing the event in that order, with times of 24:29, 24:43 and 24:47 respectively. The girls followed not far behind with Megan first home in 32:39, Grace in 32:40 and Olivia in 32:51.

The 2.6km Orange course saw Vladimir and Luke carry on from where they left off, but with the introduction of Eva Sturzaker, Georgie Wilson, Holly Suffolk, Emily and Olga Wiggins. The boys finished 1st and 2nd in the Championship with times of 39:09 (Vladimir) and 39:17 (Luke), closely followed by Eva and Georgie in joint third with a time of 40:37. Emily and Olga Wiggins were next over the line in 54:22 and 54:33 respectively and Holly Suffolk in 56:08 (who was shadowing people to make sure they didn’t get lost) completed the Preston Harriers contingent.

Emily and Olga decided they hadn’t done enough on the night and entered the more technical 3.4km Light Green Course. They successfully completed this event without missing any checkpoints in a very creditable 62:08 for Emily and 62:24 for Olga, finishing 9th and 10th in the Senior Championship.

Well done to all the Harriers who took part, for most it was their first taste of Orienteering and they did extremely well. Thanks to Bob and Karen Nash for allowing us to take part and for organising such a brilliant event, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. See you next year! Roy Parkinson.
