Lower Youth Development League Match 3

Sat 22 June 2019, Bebington, Wirral

Preston Harriers qualified for the Northern regional final which is to be held at UCLan Sports Arena Preston next month. The team was weakened by a number of the athletes being away competing for Lancashire at the North West Schools’ Combined Events championship at Crewe. Sale won the match with Harriers finishing 2 points behind Wirral in third place on 596 points. This result means that Harriers finish runners up to Sale in the league.

Star athlete of the match was under 15 Isaac Mabaya who won the 100m, 200m and 300m in 11.5s, 23.4s and 37.2s respectively. Isaac was running his first ever 300m and smashed the club record by a second and is now ranked 3rd in the country. Isaac then anchored the relay team to victory in 47.4s. 15-year-old Isaac Delaney continues his progress winning the under 15 boys discus with 34.26m. In the under 15 girls age group there were wins for Imogen Blackwell in the 1500m, crossing the line in 4.51.1. and Emma Harrison, who set a new a lifetime best when she threw 36.52m in the hammer. There was double success in the under 13 boys 800m when Sam Smalley & Lewis Townley won the ‘A’ & ‘B’ races recording 2.22.3 & 2.26.5 respectively. Jay Whiteside in the same age group won both the long and high jumps setting marks of 4.54m and 1.48m. A time of 13.2s for Connor Rigby was fastest in the under 13 boys 75m hurdles race. Molly Caffrey & Eleanor Norris-Jones were also winners in the under 13 girls 70m hurdles (12.5s) and javelin (20.37 personal best). There were 13 individual personal bests set during the match.

If Harriers finish in the top two at the Northern Final, then they will qualify for the National Final which takes place in Manchester in September. Harriers have made the national final in 7 out of the last 8 years.

League Final Table Sale 21 points, PRESTON HARRIERS 17points, Wirral 16 points, West Cheshire 12 points, Liverpool 7 points, Blackburn 6 points, Stockport 5 points.
