North of England Masters T & F Championship

Sat/Sun 29/30 June 2019, Hull One of our relatively new Masters athletes, Carol Holt, went over the Pennines to compete last weekend in the 100 & 200m track races. The 100m was on the Saturday and the 200m on the Sunday so Carol stayed over saving a repeat journey and maximising recovery.

She has only been taking part in races this year. Back in 2018 she contacted the club, who put her in touch with Sharon Wilkinson, another Masters athlete, who suggested starting with the Wednesday evening beginners/improvers group to build up fitness first. Carol had last run as a seventeen-year-old and it was after seeing one of her old colleagues from Watford Harriers posting on Facebook about his Masters exploits that she decided to ‘have a go’ herself. After steadily building up her fitness and speed she decided that 2019 would be the start of her ‘comeback’.

She ran the 100m in virtually perfect conditions – warm, sunshine and no wind – and put in a good performance, beating one of her rivals for the first time and in doing so took the gold. On the Sunday it was still warm in the stadium but became very windy and the finish of the 200m was into a strong headwind. Her training paid off, and once again she pipped her rival to the post for a second gold medal.

She is now looking forward to competing at the British Masters T &F Championships on the 10-11th August.
