Ribble Valley 10km road race, Monday 27th December 2021

Perfect running conditions greeted the hundreds of runners who flocked to Clitheroe for the popular Ribble Valley 10km road race, which once again doubled as the Northern Championships. The day was dry and still but not too cold as more than 1110 competitors toed the line for the scenic route around the Ribble Valley. This race has a reputation for its fast course and excellent organisation and it attracts athletes of all standards, from Olympians at the sharp end to club runners and fun runners. Jonny Mellor of Liverpool Harriers was the winner this year in 28:58, and the first female was Olympic marathon runner Jess Piasecki in 31:38.

Preston Harriers were well represented, with many runners keen to shake off the Christmas cobwebs and make an early mark in the club’s road running championship. Nathan Dunn was up at the front of the race and clocked 30:23 for 11th place with Joe Monk not far behind, placing 27th in 31:02. Harry Hayes was the next Harrier to finish, with a time of 35:41, closely followed by Will Metcalf in 35:46 and junior Luke Suffolk, who ran a good time of 35:47 for his first 10km race. Other Harriers to take part were Andy Whaley (37:56), Mariusz Kovacs (38:28), Steve Hallas (38:56), Alex Venables (39:14), Dougie Potter (40:07), Alan Metcalf (40:49, 3rd V60) and Kevin Hesketh (43:15, 3rd V65). Only three Harrier ladies took on the challenge. Emma Essex-Crosby was first to finish in 49:16, Marian Hesketh was 2nd FV65 in 50:11 and Julie Tyrer completed the team in 61:55.
