Winter Warmer 10k, Witton Park, Blackburn – Sunday 5th February 2017

On a good day weatherwise, the second Harriers Club Championship race saw only twelve Harriers taking part. Conditions couldn’t have been much better, it may have been ‘Buncer Lane’ that deterred some!

The race started on the track with a lap to prepare the legs for what follows, a gradual uphill out of the Park and onto Buncer Lane where the hill steepens a little at first and then after a detour round the houses on the left comes a much steeper climb to the road junction. Turning left alongside the wall the road keeps on rising for quite a while before finally levelling out leaving most people gasping for breath. From here it is good running towards Pleasington where runners turn off the road at a church and come back towards the park past the football fields and following the river.

Alan Appleby was first Harrier home and was also first M65 in the field. He had shadowed Alison Rushton who came in just behind, their chip times were 47.30 & 47.32. Next was Danny Higgins making steady improvements with a time of 48.33. Dolly Parkes bettered last year’s time by two minutes recording 52.36 and she was followed by Michael Brennand who was recovering from a cold and was down six minutes from last year with 53.10. With a slight improvement on last year Karlyn Forrest posted 53.47 with Sue Wickham almost forgetting there was a full lap of the track to do before the finish but she made it in 56.46. The ever-youthful Judith Deakin was almost the same time as last year, age not slowing her down yet! She posted 1.03.56 followed by Angela Tranter, as with Judith almost the same time as last, a little gain with 1.04.30. Lyndsey French was supported all the way by Kenny Gawne, two people from the ‘Running Fitness Group’ with times of 1.06.17 and 1.06.18, a tough race to tackle when just beginning running. Another lady from the Fitness Group, Amanda French was running to support her friend and they both finished with big smiles in 1.09.56.
