Golden Ball 10 mile road race and Trimpell 20 mile road race, Sunday 21st August 2022

Runners flocked to these popular races from all over the north of England, attracted by the flat and fast course alongside the river Lune, the easy access from the motorway and the high standard of organisation. For members of Preston Harriers, this was the final opportunity to score points for a 10 mile race in the club road running championships, and several were keen to improve their standing in the rankings. Sam Evans won the race in 55.15 and junior Luke Suffolk broke the hour with 59.23 in his first attempt at the distance, which brought him 7th place. A trio of Harriers came into the finish in quick succession, with Andy Whaley 8th overall and 1st V45 in a new best time of 61.11, Mariusz Kovacs close behind him in 9th place (61.46) and Stuart Nixon 10th in 64.40. Michael Croft was 19th in 68.36 and Steve Mort clocked 70.52 for 27th place. Preston Harriers’ men were easily the top team, with 5 runners in the top ten. Cathy Flitcroft was 3rd lady in 75.04, Marian Hesketh ran 84.32 and Julie Tyrer ran a season’s best time of 94.22. Two Harriers bravely ran double the distance in the Trimpell 20, where Russell Codd finished in 2 hours 54 minutes 4 seconds and Sue Wickham ran 3:25:18.
